Backstage Pass
Have you ever wondered what a medical research lab looks like? Here's your change to get a behind-the-scenes look at one for yourself! See researchers in their element, conducting studies, using specialized equipment, and making scientific discoveries that could have major impact on a variety of medical conditions and diseases.
We can help plan Backstage pass for interested donors, school groups, youth sports teams and clubs, and camps. Reach out to us to learn more!
Breakthrough Breakfast Series
Designed to celebrate groundbreaking research and medical innovation, the Breakthrough Breakfast Series will showcase a different area of medical discovery, featuring esteemed researchers at the forefront of their fields.
From Cardiac research to Cancer, Immunity and Vaccinology, Neurosciences & Brain Diseases (including mental health and Alzheimer's disease), to Healthy Aging and Frailty, the series spans a diverse spectrum of crucial medical topics. Each event will include researchers, graduate students, patients, or community members who have contributed to or benefited from this research.
Harnessing the Power of the Human Immune System
The inaugural event will focus on research that addresses infectious diseases, chronic inflammation, and cancer – including teaching your immune system to fight cancer and the development of new, targeted vaccines. Count on being inspired, learning about innovations in healthcare, and enjoying lively conversations and a delicious hot breakfast.
Moderated by Dalhousie's President Dr. Kim Brooks, event speakers include Dr. Lisa Barrett (PGM '09), Dr. Scott Halperin, and Dr. Craig McCormick

Theme: Immunity, Infection, Inflammation, and Vaccinology (I3V)
About the Speakers
Dr. Lisa Barrett is a Clinician Investigator and Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and Department of Pathology at Dalhousie University. She is the Principal Investigator of the Senescence, Aging, Infection, and Immunity (SAIL) laboratory that studies immune responses in chronic and persistent viral infections.
Dr. Scott Halperin is a Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology and Immunology at Dalhousie University and the Director of the Canadian Center for Vaccinology (CCfV). Dr. Halperin’s area of expertise is pertussis (whooping cough) and his research focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pertussis and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
Dr. Craig McCormick is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Dalhousie University. Dr. McCormick co-founded the Canadian Society for Virology (CSV) and co-founded and served as Director for the Infection, Immunity, Inflammation & Vaccinology (I3V) team at Dalhousie from 2018 to 2021. Dr. McCormick is an expert on host antiviral responses and viral evasion mechanisms, which focuses on emerging and re-emerging viruses with pandemic potential like influenza A viruses and coronaviruses.
