THE DMRF MOLLY APPEAL CAMPAIGN, FALL 2020

40 years ago Molly Moore took a simple but dramatic step. She gave five dollars to Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation. While not a woman of great means, she believed that if everyone made a gift to support medical research, together we could make a big difference.

Today you, our donors, are making a big difference.

Now, more than ever, we know that health research has the power to change and save lives. Living through a global health pandemic has made that abundantly clear.

But while dozens of our exceptional researchers race to find faster diagnosis, better treatments and ultimately, a vaccine for the novel coronavirus COVID-19, other crucial research areas urgently need support.

Each of us has been impacted by cancer, dementia, cardiac conditions and so much more. Our researchers can’t stop now, just because there is a global pandemic. They must work even harder to ensure our health and wellbeing.

That’s why this year’s Molly Appeal is supporting health research that is critical, but had to take a backseat while we urgently raised funds for COVID-19 research. This year, your Molly gift will have its greatest impact yet, as your support bolsters multiple areas of local health research.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Dear DMRF Molly Donors,

The year 2020 is showing us all what it really means to come together. Time and time again, in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we’re seeing stirring examples of humanity coming together with support for positive change.

This spirit of community and making the world a better place is what the Molly Appeal has always been about. Molly believed that if we each give what we can to medical research, together, we can make a huge difference in people’s lives.

And Molly was right. The difference YOU have made is nothing short of remarkable, and we’re so grateful.

Your donations have been invaluable in our researchers’ work to conquer the coronavirus. I am overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from you and our fellow Maritimers. But while our researchers continue to work tirelessly to find a vaccine for COVID-19, other vital research projects – in areas such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and cardiac care – urgently need funding.

Your support is needed now more than ever. As a consequence of the pandemic, funding sources such as grants for health research have been diverted or delayed. That means we’re relying on our family of supporters to make sure vital research doesn’t fall behind – or stop altogether.

By giving to the Molly Appeal today, you’ll support life-changing, life-saving research projects you have come to know us for.  This is why this fall’s Molly Appeal campaign is so important, because it ensures that health research, on all fronts, is going strong, so each of us, can go strong.

In the past 40 years of the Molly Appeal, we’ve seen what happens when we all come together; when we become part of something greater than ourselves. Now I’m asking you to come together once again, so our experts can move forward in their quest to discover life-saving treatments and cures for you and those you love.

Thank you, from all of us at DMRF.

With gratitude,

Joanne Bath

A SPECIAL RESEARCHER MESSAGE

Dear DMRF Supporters,

My name is Dr. Lisa Barrett and I am honoured to write to all the generous DMRF donors whose support means so much to a researcher like me.

You may have seen or heard me in the local and national news, speaking about COVID-19. As a physician and scientist who was born and raised in Atlantic Canada, I’m proud of the way the people of Nova Scotia have come together to fight this pandemic.

Thanks to four decades of support from Maritimers, DMRF was able to pivot directly into COVID-19 research as soon as the virus hit our shores. Because of our experience and expertise in studying the immune system, vaccines and infectious diseases, DMRF scientists like myself are now at the centre of Canada’s coronavirus research network.

The people in our region have pulled together brilliantly in the face of this pandemic. Now I’m asking you to join your neighbours in supporting critical health research by sending a donation today to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation’s Molly Appeal.

Healthcare professionals like me are counting on conscientious community members like you to practice social distancing and careful hygiene, for sure, but we also urgently need your financial support for our research.

Although Dalhousie scientists are tackling COVID-19 head on, we haven’t lost sight of the crucial research for other diseases that continue to threaten the lives of Nova Scotians. Cancer doesn’t stop for a pandemic. Alzheimer’s disease hasn’t slowed because of COVID-19. Heart disease still claims lives every single day. These devastating illnesses still affect our families, friends and neighbours.

By giving to the Molly Appeal today, you’ll support life-changing, life-saving research projects that will revolutionize the way we diagnose and treat diseases.

I thank you sincerely for your generosity and continued support.

Dr. Lisa Barrett
