Impact 2020 Feature Story

Over the past seven years, Dalhousie’s Dr. Rudolf Uher and colleagues have been leading an innovative long-term study known as FORBOW (Families Overcoming Risk and Building Opportunities for Well-being), aimed at preventing severe mental illness and supporting positive mental health in youth. Understanding that mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia have a genetic underlying, the FORBOW study has engaged over 500 families in Nova Scotia with a history of severe mental illness to test whether early interventions—either in childhood or adolescence—can interrupt this cycle.
