A SMU alumnus, Mr. Durland will provide a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to this role. A former Group Head and CEO of Global Banking and Markets for Scotiabank, Mike retired from Scotiabank in March of 2016 to pursue a variety of business, philanthropic and academic interests Today, Mr. Durland is the CEO of Melancthon Capital, a member of the Business Strategy Committee for the Global Risk Institute, the Chair of the Board of Directors of DeepLearning, a founding principal in Cabot Links, a member of the Board of Directors of TruLeaf Sustainable Agriculture, a member of the advisory board of Riipen Networks Inc, a member of the Advisory Board of the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University, a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Social Impact at Queen’s University and the Master of Management Analytics Program at Queen’s University. Mr. Durland holds a BComm degree from St. Mary’s University, a PhD in Finance and Operations Research from Queen’s University and an honorary Doctorate from St. Mary’s University.

In accepting the role of Chancellor, Mr. Durland takes over from Paul D. Sobey, DComm’11, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Empire Company Limited, who served in this role since 2014.
