The Lynn Bourinot Fund in Schizophrenia was established by John and Joyce Bourinot in memory of their daughter, Lynn. Its aim is to support schizophrenia research and raise awareness of adolescent mental health problems in the health care community and community at large.
2007 – Dr. Kimberley Good, Department of Psychiatry
Dr. Kim Good received a $6,000 grant to support her research project, Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement in Co-morbid Psychosis - Nicotine Dependence. The project involves an examination of genetics and substance abuse/dependence in patients with first episode psychosis. It examines the genetic variants of the enzyme which breaks down nicotine and the enzyme which breaks down specific neurotransmitters which are thought to be involved in psychotic symptoms. A second pilot study will investigate what effects nicotine has on cognition (thinking and remembering) in patients with early psychosis and in healthy controls. This grant helped Dr. Good purchase equipment required for these studies.
