This award is presented annually to a graduate student, to enable them to attend an international meeting in their discipline. It was established by Anne Stanton in memory of her brother, who lost his life in service to his country during the Second World War. The Stanton Award encourages research into the causes or treatment of bipolar disorder.
In 2006, the award supported a renowned expert in the genetics of bipolar disorder - Dr. Chun Xu, a postdoctoral researcher at Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health - to travel to Dalhousie to meet with local clinicians and researchers in this field. Over the two-day visit, Dr. Xu shared her findings and insights about the genetic underpinnings of bipolar disorder, providing the local researchers with valuable input that will further the development of biopolar research at Dalhousie Medical School and its affiliated teaching hospitals.
