The Max Forman Senior Research Prize is the Foundation’s most prestigious award, presented annually to a member of the Faculty of Medicine whose research achievements have enriched the academic environment and advanced scientific understanding. This prize was established many years ago by Sophie Forman in memory of her late husband, businessman and philanthropist Max Forman. It traditionally alternated from year to year between a junior and a senior member of the faculty. With the establishment of three new junior awards, however, The Max Forman Prize is now awarded annually at the Community of Scholars dinner as a senior prize of $10,000.
Dr. Roy Duncan, Department of Microbiology & Immunology
Since discovering ‘FAST proteins’ in the 1990s, Dr. Roy Duncan has gone on to develop these ‘fusion-associated small transmembrane proteins’ into powerful new strategies against cancer and viruses. “We trap drugs inside liposomes, then attach FAST proteins to the liposome to deliver the drug directly into the cell,” he says. “This leads to more effective vaccines and cancer treatments.”
